Why I Took the 7-Day Handbag Rotation Challenge

After watching the popular Netflix series “Tidying Up” with Marie Kondo, I started thinking seriously about my own closet. I own several handbags, and each one genuinely adds something to my wardrobe. But I had fallen into a lazy habit—carrying the same bag for a week or even two at a time.

Lip gloss, mints, a tide pen, antibacterial wipes, and a few other small items stay together so I can move them from one bag to the next without much fuss. This makes switching bags easier, but I knew I could do better. So I set a challenge: swap my handbag every single day for one full week.

What I Learned From Switching Bags Daily

So I set myself a simple challenge: carry a different handbag every day for one full week. I am not a morning person, and I usually rush out the door for work. Taking extra time to choose a bag, remove it from its dust bag, transfer my items, and put the previous bag back on the shelf took longer than I anticipated.

I tried preparing the night before, but I still preferred making the switch after getting dressed in the morning. This process also made me more mindful about keeping the inside of my bag clean. The hardest part was deciding what to carry each day.

Choosing which bag to wear also took time because I can be indecisive. My collection includes a mix of premier and contemporary brands, and I made an effort to use a variety of styles. Monday: Chloé Faye

I started the week with one of my favorite bags, the Chloé Faye. The bag is not the most spacious in my collection, but it was ideal for a straightforward office day. It doesn’t hold as much as some of my other bags, but that was fine since I was only going to and from the office. It also complemented my booties perfectly.

Tuesday: Louis Vuitton Damier Azur Neverfull

I wanted something larger to hold extra layers and winter accessories, and I also felt like brightening a gray day with a lighter canvas print. I chose my Louis Vuitton Damier Azur Neverfull because I love carrying white in winter, and I needed a larger bag for a scarf, gloves, and a hat. The Damier Azur print lifted my mood on a gloomy day. I bought it during a trip to Banff, and it has been a reliable companion ever since.

Wednesday: Roots Bag

It was a damp day, so I reached for my low-maintenance Roots bag. It is also the kind of piece I do not have to worry about too much. The leather can handle wear and tear, making it perfect for days when I don’t want to baby my bags. I first learned about Roots on the PurseForum before my trip.

I had long admired the style, and owning it feels especially satisfying because it captures that effortless, understated elegance I associate with French dressing. Friday: Mulberry Bayswater

I wore an all-black outfit on Friday, so I wanted a bag that would stand out. I chose my Mulberry Bayswater in a fire red color. It is a bit weighty and does not offer a crossbody option, but for a day when I could keep it close at hand, it felt like the right choice. It is a bit heavy and lacks a crossbody strap, but it was perfect for a workday where I kept it safely stored for most of the day.

Saturday: Chanel Medallion Tote

Even if this style feels less current to some people, it still brings me a lot of joy. I grabbed my Chanel Medallion Tote, one of my all-time favorites. Some Chanel enthusiasts consider this discontinued style dated, but it is my only Chanel piece and it brings me immense joy. I usually prefer a smaller bag when I know I will be sitting at a table, since a crossbody keeps things easy and out of the way.

Sunday: Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac

Sunday brunch with family called for a hands-free option, so I chose my Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac. I avoid bringing large bags to restaurants because I dislike worrying about where to place my bag during the meal. Would I switch bags every day again?
